ESTHERVILLE--Funeral services for Nels H. Christensen, 84, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Sister Catherine Fiegan officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with full military rites performed by VFW Post 3388, American Legion Post 91 and AMVETS Post 3391 of Estherville. He died on Dec. 30, 2000 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.
Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1916 in Huntington the son of Jens and Johannah (Nielsen) Christensen.
He received his education in the Emmet Consolidated School in rural Estherville, graduating from high school in 1934. he then served in the United States Army from 1940 through 1945 during World War II. He was stationed in Australia and New Guinea. Following his discharge, he returned to the Estherville area.
On Sept. 7, 1945 he was united in marriage to Anne Marie Schaper in Fairmont, Minn. After their marriage, the couple made their home in the Huntington area where he engaged in farming. He also worked at various places in Estherville, including the United States Postal Service at the post office in Estherville. Anne died in 1975. He retired from farming and the post office in 1981 and moved to Estherville. He enjoyed going to dances in his younger years.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3388 in Estherville.
He is survived by two sons, Gerald W. Christensen and wife Linda of Graham, N.C. and Robert N. Christensen and wife Loretta (Lolly) of Valley Center, Calif.; one sister, Evelyn Hoganson and husband Arnold of Estherville and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; special friend, Ruth Brown; his parents; one sister and four brothers.
