Charles L. Lamb Dies at Age 59

Charles L. Lamb, 59, retired railroad man from Estherville died last night at his summer home in Park Rapids, Minn., apparently of a heart ailment.

Lamb suffered a stroke about three years ago and retired from his work with the Rock Island railroad here in January of 1949. He had been in ill health since suffering the stroke.

Mr. and Mrs. Lamb had gone to Park Rapids about two weeks ago. He died during the night.

Lamb is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. Two sons, Norman and George preceded him in death. Daughters are Mrs. Lloyd (Evelyn) Lidke of Estherville and Mrs. Charles (Donna) Cash of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. One son, Daryl is living in Spotswood, N.J. Norman was killed in Manila in 1947 and George died in infancy.

Charles Lamb Was Retired R.R. Engineer

Charles Lamb, 59, died at 11:45 a.m. Oct. 3 at Park Rapids, Minn. Born Dec. 8, 1891 in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of Charles and Julia Lamb.

At the age of ten, he moved with his family to Buffalo Center. There he received his education and on June 19 [10th?] was married to Lois Lindsey of Ocheydedan. To this union five children were born. The family moved to Estherville in 1925.

He became a fireman on the Rock Island railway in 1916 where he was employed for 33 years. During this time he advanced to engineman.

But on Jan. 19, 1949, he suffered a stroke and was forced to retire from railroad work. After retiring he and Mrs. Lamb purchased acreage in Osage county near Park Rapids where they spent their summers.

He was a member of the Methodist church and to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Enginemen.

Two sons preceded him in death, George Merrill at the age of three years and Norman Edward who was killed in Manila, Philippine Islands in 1947 at the age of 20.

Surviving him are his wife, Lois, one son, George, of Spotswood, N.J., two daughters, Mrs. Charles W. Cash (Bonnie) of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md., and Mrs. Lloyd Lidke (Evelyn) of Estherville; and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary Braming of Iowa Falls, three stepsisters and one step brother.

He was buried in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 24, 1951)
