Another Pioneer Called Home
Mrs. E. L. Brown Passed Away Yesterday at the Home of Mr. and Mrs. Crim
Mrs. E. L. Brown, [Caroline T. Nelson] who has been a sufferer of paralysis for nearly a year and during this time almost constantly confined to her bed, died Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mr. A. A. Crim, on north Sixth street, where she had been removed from her home on east Main street that she might have the constant care of her daughter.

Mrs. Brown was past eighty-two years at the time of her death and had been a resident of Emmet county since 1882. She was born at Athol, Mass., May 7, 1839, and married to Elijah L. Brown in 1856. They came to Boone county, Iowa, in 1867 and engaged in farming. In 1882 they purchased what is now known as the Markley farm southeast of Estherville and moved to this county. They resided on this farm for many years. Her husband died twenty-two years ago. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. A. A. Crim and two sons, Edwin and Fred, both of this city, one brother, Geo. C. Nelson, of Boone, Iowa, and fourteen grandchildren to mourn her death.

Mrs. Brown was a remarkable woman. It was the writer’s good fortune to have known her long and well. Nearly forty years ago when we were but a mere boy, we lived neighbors to the Brown family and many a good meal we have eaten at the Brown home. She was a wonderful woman, tender hearted, kind and benevolent. Few people realize what the name of mother means until she has passed to her reward, then they realize they have lost the only real and true friend in all the world. Mrs. Brown loved her family and is going to be missed from the family fireside. We wish we could say something to comfort the bereaved family but in times like this words fall heavily.

Deceased was a true Christian woman, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the pastor, Rev. J. W. LaGrone will preach the funeral sermon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Crim at two o’clock tomorrow afternoon and the remains interred in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 6, 1922
