ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Sylvester Clark , one of the Early Settlers of Northwestern Iowa Passed Away Saturday.
Though his death had been expected to occur at anytime, many friends were deeply grieved when the word passed around Saturday morning that Sylvester Clark had passed away.
Mr. Clark was one of our old settlers of the county, and one of the most respected citizens. But he has gone from among loving friends to join the other dear one that has proceeded him a few months on the journey to that better happier land beyond.
OBITUARY
Sylvester Clark was born in Mohawk County, New York, Aug 9, 1836. Was married to Barthena Youker, Mar 9, 1865. Together they moved to Emmett County, Iowa twenty-eight years ago and settled near Estherville, Iowa. Here they lived and tolled together until a few years ago they left the farm and moved to town. Last Spring Mrs. Clark died after a long and painful illness having tried all that medical skill and change of climate could do for her. After her death he went to Michigan and Pennsylvania to visit friends and relatives thinking that a change of scenes and surroundings would serve to wear away the sorrow that came to his life. But in Pennsylvania he was stricken down with heart disease from which he never recovered. He came home two weeks ago, lingered until Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock when he sank peacefully away. His funeral was held at the M. E. Church on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. G. Pittenger, assisted by Dr. Bevan of the Baptist Church. He leaves two children, a daughter (Carrie L. Carpenter) and a son (Robert S Clark), an aged father (Joseph Clark, Jr.) and three sisters (Mary Jane Barrett, Helen L. Bowman Webb, and Lucy A. Phillips) to mourn his loss. He was an exemplary faithful Christian man, having been a member of the Methodist Church for forty-five years. His age was sixty years, four months, and three days. His remains were laid to rest in the old cemetery.
Note: Mr. Sylvester Clark was a soldier in the Union Army
