Eugene M. Carnahan Dies at Ray Kennedy Home; 66 Years Old

Funeral services were held Saturday for Eugene M. Carnahan, father of Merrill Carnahan and of Mrs. Ray Kennedy, who died last Wednesday afternoon at the Ray Kennedy home. He was 66 years old.

Mr. Carnahan had failed rapidly for the past few months, being bothered by a bad heart, which finally caused his death. For the past five years he has resided with the Ray Kennedy family, having moved here from Graettinger where he had lived since 1916.

A few months before his death Mr. Carnahan weighed nearly two hundred pounds, but failed so rapidly that he weighed no more than seventy when he died. He was an active farmer all his life and led a strenuous career.

Eugene Marion Carnahan

Eugene Marion Carnahan was born August 25, 1859, at Reasoner, Iowa. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony T. Carnahan. It was only natural that having been born on a farm he should take to the business of farming which he followed all of his active life. He was familiar with the experiences of the district school and the activities of rural life. On October 31, 1888, he was married to Jennie McKenzie. She bore him one child who died in infancy and she also passed away after three years of married life. Six years later he married Eugenia May Schooley by whom he had three children, one of whom died in infancy, the other two are Merrill E. Carnahan and Mrs. Ray Kennedy, both of Estherville. Mrs. Carnahan died May 26, 1924.

His early married life was spent at Adair. In 1892 he came to Emmetsburg where he resided for about eight years. Since then he has lived at Terril, Graettinger and Estherville. Since the death of Mrs. Carnahan he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kennedy.

Early in life he became a Christian and united with the Methodist church with which he held membership the remainder of his life. Mr. Carnahan was a quiet, faithful and devoted member of the church. It is one of the chief sources of comfort to the members of the family today that both father and mother left them the memory of a Christian example.

He is survived by his son Merrill and daughter Myrtle and grandson Robert Eugene Kennedy. Also by two sisters, Mrs. Emma Pentice of Emmetsburg,
Iowa; Mrs. Ella Andre Bangough, Saskatchewan, Canada; also four brothers: Joseph A., of Lafayette, Colorado; Ulyssus G., of Paullina, Iowa; Amos D., of Emmetsburg, Iowa; and James E. of Bangough, Saskatchewan, Canada. One sister, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Ruggless, died two years ago.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Ray Kennedy on Saturday afternoon. Interment took place at Oak Hill cemetery.
