Capt James S. Knipe Killed At Okinawa
Armstrong Man In Medical Corps.
Capt. James S. Knipe, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Knipe of Armstrong, was killed in action April 12 at Okinawa his parents learned Friday when they received a telegram from the war department.
Captain Knipe, who had been overseas since July 1, 1944, had participated in the invasion at Leyte and was then sent to Okinawa where he has been since April 1. The last letter received by his parents was dated April 6.
Born During Last War.
Knipe was born at Estherville shortly before the Armistice of World War I was signed. His father was serving in the armed forces at the time. James attended the Armstrong schools and was graduated from the Armstrong high school, after which he attended the University of Iowa studying a medical course. He was graduated from the university in 1943 and then served nine months internship at San Jose, Calif.
Immediately after his internship he entered the army and was commissioned a first lieutenant in the medical corps. He was promoted to the ranking of captain in 1944 and has been battalion surgeon with the 96th division.
Has Widow, Son.
Knipe entered the service Jan. 1, 1944, and was stationed at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., after which he was sent to Vancouver, Wash., Camp White, Ore., and then to San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Survivors are his widow and year-old son, James III, who live at Clear Lake, his parents, Dr. and Mrs. J, B. Knipe living at Armstrong, W, J. Knipe of Spencer, two sisters, Mrs. W. B. Campbell of Gilmore City and Marilyn, who lives at home.
