BERTHA SUNDE, PIONEER LADY, LAID TO REST
Bertha Serena Sunde nee Hovardsholm, was born June 13, 1850, at Hovardsholm, Sandhordland, Norway. On January 7, 1875 she was married to Tollof Sunde. In 1883 they emigrated to America and settled in Grundy County, Ill. Three years later they moved to Emmet County, Iowa. For 80 years they lived on the farm west of Dolliver. They then retired and moved to Estherville in 1916. Mr. Sunde died November 1925. Mrs. Sunde has since her childhood been a member of the Lutheran church. Mr. and Mrs. Sunde were for many years among the pillars of the Palestine congregation, but on coming to Estherville they united with the Estherville Lutheran church; they were respected and loved by all for their devoted Christian lives and characters. Mrs. Sunde was of a quiet, retiring disposition, a person who made few demands up others, but herself desired to serve and help others. She had expressed the hope that she might be spared from a long lingering illness and becoming a burden to anyone. This prayer was granted her. She was up and around a little until her last. Having laid down to rest a little she quietly fell asleep in Jesus [care?] Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. She leaves to mourn her departure, 7 children, namely T. T. Sunde, Mrs Anfin Shaw, Mrs. Carl Shaw, and Mrs. T. R. Olson of Estherville, Nels and Thor Sunde near Huntington and Rev. L. O. Sunde of Arlington, S. D. Two children have, besides her husband, preceded her. The funeral was held from her home at Estherville and Palestine Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon. Interment was made beside her husband in Palestine Cemetery, Rev. L. A. Mathre, officiating.
