Mrs. Olson, Mrs. Herman Sorum's Mother, is Dead

Mrs. Thorvald Olson, 85, died yesterday [1 Sep 1944] at 1:15 p.m. at the Herman Sorum home on North Fourth Street. Mrs. Olson had been in good health until last year but has been confined to her bed for almost nine weeks.

Julia Berven was born Sept. 25, 1858, in Hardanger, Norway, and came to the United States when she was 18 years old. [Her father was Knut Berven; her mother was Christie Jacobson. Both parents were born in Norway.]

She attended schools in Norway before coming to America. On March 7, 1879, she was united in marriage to Thorvald Olson at Webster City. Shortly after their marriage the young couple moved to Emmet county where they farmed until 14 years ago when they moved to town.

Mrs. Olson was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church at High Lake.

During the past several winters Mr. and Mrs. Olson have lived at the Herman Sorum residence but a year ago moved to the Sorum residence to make their permanent home.

Mrs. Olson is survived by her husband who is 88 years old, her daughter, Mrs. Herman Sorum; two sons, Tom Olson of Ringsted and Gustav Olson of Estherville; a sister who lives in Albert Lea, Minn.; another sister living in Los Angeles, Calif., and a brother at Bremerton, Wash. There are also nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren surviving.

Three sons preceded their mother in death. They were Alfred, Ole and Knute.

Funeral arrangements have been made for Monday afternoon. A short service at 1:30 p.m. will be held at the Herman Sorum residence and another service at 2:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran church with Rev. L. G. Hinderaker officiating. Burial will be in the Swan Lake Cemetery.
