World War Veteran Dies of Overseas Wounds

Herman Freed of this city passed away at his home Sunday after a lingering illness, at the age of 36 years. Mr. Freed was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa, April 7, 1893. In his early childhood he lived on a farm 4 miles east of Spirit Lake known as Tusculture farm. At this place he resided until the year 1909 when he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Freed to Estherville, at which place he has since made his home, with the exception of the time when he was overseas. He was a private in the World War and served in Co. K, 161st Infantry. His first assignment was to Camp Pike, Arkansas, where he remained for 10 months. He was honorably discharged mat 7, 1919.

He leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Freed of Estherville, Iowa; also five sisters and two brothers as follows: Mrs. P. J. Meek, Austin, Minn.; Mrs. Paul Drushella, Humboldt; Mrs. Fern Broffle, Gruver; Mrs Peter Weber, Spirit Lake; Mrs. James Monroe, Detroit, Mich.; Ernest Freed, Gruver; and Percy Freed in Canada, together with a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor. Interment was made in Lake View cemetery, Spirit Lake, Iowa.
