Early Railroads

RAILROAD

I am working on publishing an early account of travel from the east to Minnesota. The year is about 1854. I am puzzled by this.

"We traveled by rail until we reached Dubuque, Iowa, the then terminus of the railroad west, and there took passage on a steamboat up the Mississippi and I can well remember how much more pleasant it was to ride on the water than on the rail, the former being free from dust, the accommodation for eating and sleeping much better, and the passengers far more sociable and agreeable."

1. When did Dubuque have the first railroad?
2. Could it be that the railroad terminus was across the Mississippi from Dubuque?

Thanks
