Deaths and Marriages

MCARDLE - BURKE

I’m hoping you can help me.

Patrick and Catherine (Burke) McArdle arrived in Prairie Creek, Dubuque, Iowa, about 1849. They are in the 1860 census. Patrick McArdle was murdered in 1864 and was interred in the Holy Family Church cemetery on February 14, 1864. His wife Catherine pleaded guilty to the crime and was imprisoned in Jackson, Iowa, rather than hanged, as it was believed she was covering for one of her sons (Patrick). She was pardoned and released in 1868.

1- I am looking for Catherine Burke’s death (after her release from prison in 1868) and burial place. I believe she might be in the same cemetery as her husband, Patrick McArdle.

2- Also, her daughter's (Mary McArdle) marriage from about 1863. Mary was born in Saint-Colomban, Quebec, Canada on January 4,1836.

3- Trace where her other two other sons, James, born in Ste-Scholastique, Quebec on August 31, 1834, and Patrick, born on November 14, 1841 went.

Catherine Burke was born in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1804. She was the daughter of Michael Burke and Catherine Mahan. They emigrated to Quebec, Canada about 1825. Her parents are both buried in Sainte-Scholastique, Quebec, Canada.

Patrick McArdle and Catherine Burke married in Sainte-Scholastique, Quebec in 1830. The McArdle family moved to Iowa in 1849. Five of Patrick and Catherine's 10 children are buried in Saint-Colomban, Quebec. The others emigrated with them to Dubuque, Iowa, namely James, Mary, Patrick, and John. John ended up in Nebraska, but I have no trace of James, Mary, or Patrick. Any help would be appreciated!

Respectfully yours
Kelley O’Rourke
