In Response To: Searching for family Whelan (Barb Gegg)

Hi. I posted this in 2018 and did not receive any responses. I am preparing for a research trip to Iowa so thought I would try again. I found my great, great grandparents and my great grandmother in the 1860 Census in the City of Dubuque, County Dubuque, Post Office Dubuque. Their names were James Whelan, Anne Whelan, Frances Whelan, and her sister Mary E Whelan. He was a miner. In the census they were surrounded by Irish. Was there an Irish neighborhood in Dubuque in 1860? Was the Irish Church St. Raphael? Were there certain neighborhoods that miners lived in? Any suggestions on how to determine what mine he worked in? Thank you.
