Story of Indian Attack on Smith Farm

SMITH

I am trying to authenticate a story regarding an Indian attack in 1879 on the farm of Samuel Amos Smith. Supposedly, Samuel Smith was killed and his wife and 4 daughters escaped and returned to Vermont where she was born.
Samuel A. Smith was born in 1837 in Chautauqua, New York. He married Helen Jane Carlin, sometime before they arrived in Iowa. I have no information on when he arrived or where he lived, except that his daughter Lydia was born in Dubuque . I have been unable to confirm her birth in Iowa records but she has Dubuque listed on her marriage license.
I have found some census records of names that match my query, but the other facts do not line up. Would appreciate any information or suggestions.
