Cogan family in 1870 census

Have located a Cogan family in the Dubuque Co 1870 census, Concord township, persons born in Ireland. Margaret, age 47, widow, and sons Terrence, 18, and John, 11. There is also an Edward Cogan, age 22, who could be a son or other relative, living next door. I am looking for an Edward Cogan, born in Ireland, who may have drowned in the Mississippi River or the Atlantic Ocean, and left a wife and two children (but not sure of this). I have no definite dates for Edward's birth or demise, though two siblings were born in the late 1830s in County Cork Ireland. Any help? Thanks!
