Notes on James Garth (#27)
Going to have his picture taken his team of horses bolted throwing him into a post resulting in his death a week later.(taken from May Moats hand written record)
James Garth's brother Ralph Garth lived in Dubuque and sent James $500 to bring the family across the ocean to Dubuque, USA, in 1852. They worked in lead mining and were very successful as that is what they had done in England. They got to keep 90% of the money and 10% to the local government. They were able to save quite a bit and bought land and went into farming.
After James was killed in the horse and buggy accident all of his and Mary's children moved to Cass Township, Hamilton County, Iowa in 1869. Mary got on the next train from Dubuque to Webster City, Ia.

Notes on Ralph 1M James Bro Garth (#39)
Ralph sent brother James $500 so he could bring his family from England to Dubuque.
Ralph originally was one of the early lead miners in the area. A friend of the Garth family. Mr. Bonson and his brothers were two of the first lead miners from England that developed a pretty major "lead rush" in the Galena Il. and Dubuque areas. They developed an efficient smelting process. Fascinating reading on the subject is the online book "70 years of my recollections" Indian wars in Iowa Illinois and miners. http.//www.archive.org/stream/recollectionseven00chetrich/recollectionseven00chetrich-djv. Also see Dubuque Geneolagy for maps showing many of the people that came from Swaldale. There is a R. Garth farm.
