Harlan G. Melchior, Jr., 91, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Dubuque, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in Scottsdale.

Services were held at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church, Scottsdale. Private burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Memorial services will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque. The Messinger Mortuary & Chapel, Inc., Scottsdale, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Melchior was vice president of the trust department at American Trust and Savings Bank, Dubuque, until his retirement in 1977. He was in banking a remarkable 60 years.

He was born on April 23, 1912, in Dubuque, son of Harlan G. and Louise (Pilmaier) Melchior. He married Virginia Donovan on Jan. 28, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. They were married 61 years.

He graduated from Columbia Academy and College (now Loras College) in 1934. He later received graduate degrees in banking from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northwestern University, Chicago.

He served for four years with the 13th Army Air Force as a staff sergeant, stationed in the states, as well as the South Pacific, during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia, of Scottsdale; two daughters, Mary (John) Doveton, of Lawrence, Kan., and Sue (Peter) VanLeer, of Scottsdale; four grandchildren, Tina Hep, of Santa Barbara, Calif., Jennifer Schefer, of Minneapolis, Clare Rogers, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Michael Doveton, of Lawrence; and four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Sophie, James and Ava.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Melchior; and a sister, Denise Melchior.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque and Hospice of the Valley, Scottsdale.
