Bernadine E. Wolbers Hines

Mrs. Bernadine E. Wolbers Hines, 85, of Heritage Manor Nursing Home, formerly of the Alverno Apartments, 3525 Windsor Ave., died at 12:55 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Otter Creek, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a parish Christian wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Hines was an elementary school teacher and taught in Jackson County rural schools, as well as Dubuque public and parochial schools, including St. Patrick's, Holy Ghost and Sacred Heart, before retiring from Audubon in 1981.

She was born on Aug. 7, 1918, in Bernard, Iowa, daughter of Patrick and Ida (Gavin) Callaghan.

Bernadine grew up in rural Bernard. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School, North Garyowen, rural Bernard, in 1937. She then went on to graduate from the University of Dubuque.

She married Albert J. Wolbers on May 24, 1938, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard; he passed away on March 25, 1963. She married her second husband, Cecil R. Hines, on Dec. 27, 1969, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque; he passed away on Oct. 22, 1986.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Rosary Society, Sacred Heart Citizen's Card Club, Orioles Fraternal Auxiliary and the Dubuque Boat Club.

Surviving are four sons, Patrick (Yvonne) Wolbers, of Bernard, Albert Wolbers, of Key West, Iowa, Justin (Sharon) Wolbers, of Osceola, Ind., and Loras (Sandra) Wolbers, of East Dubuque, Ill.; three daughters, Colleen (Elmer) Schwers, of Dubuque, Rose Ann (Daniel) Muntz, of Sedalia, Mo., and Marie (David) Wiegand, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a sister, Jean Marie Noonan, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a former daughter-in-law, Sheila Wolbers, of Dubuque; a stepson, Dale (Sara) Hines, of Dubuque; four stepdaughters, Jeneene (Wayne) Hennings and Lana (Joseph) Pfab, both of Dubuque, Phyllis Hessel, of Terrell, Texas, and Denise (Gerald) Cook, of Fisher, Ark.; a stepdaughter-in-law, Betty Hines, of Dubuque; a stepson-in-law, Richard Kieffer, of Dubuque; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 30 step grandchildren; 48 step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Larry, Robert and Ralph Callaghan; four sisters, Ione Callaghan, Rachel Wolfe, Verna O'Connell and Grace Keating; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Richard (Janaan) Kieffer; a stepson, Donald Hines; and two infant sons.

A Bernadine E. Wolbers Hines Memorial Fund has been established by the family.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the Heritage Manor Nursing Home staff, Dr. John E. Whalen and the staff of Tri-State Dialysis for the excellent care provided to Bernadine.
