Charles W. "Chuck" Beckman, 81, of Sunnycrest Manor, formerly of 4852 Hilken Hill Road, died at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, St. Catherine, Iowa. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1921, in Nashua, Iowa, son of Charles and Meatha (Kunkel) Beckman.

He married Dorothy I. Pitz on Aug. 7, 1947, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque. Charles and Dorothy farmed in the St. Catherine area for many years. He also was in construction most of his life.

He served with the Army during World War II, spending some time in France. Charles was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Catherine's Parish and the Labor Local 659. He liked watching sports, fishing and playing horseshoes. He especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and his dogs.

Surviving are four daughters, Charlotte A. (James) Weitz, Anne D. (Larry) Kretz and Marian E. (Pat) O'Meara, all of Dubuque, and Jane M. Munz, of Montrose, Iowa; three sons, Peter C. Beckman, Marty J. (Chris) Beckman and Phil E. Beckman, all of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Mae Limback, of Topeka, Kan., and Marian (Hugh) Wild, of Riverside, Calif.; a brother, Edward Beckman, of Marshalltown, Iowa; and nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on Dec. 26, 1978; a sister, Norma Morgan; and two brothers, Mark Beckman and Paul Beckman.
