Donald Duehr, 67, of 2139 Clarke Drive, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the home he built 45 years ago, after fighting a courageous two-month battle with cancer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eugene Kutsch officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1941, in Bankston, Iowa, son of Edward and Christina (Potts) Duehr. He married Geny Henkels on May 9, 1964, in Farley, Iowa.
He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1959 and was looking forward to attending his 50th class reunion.
Don served with the Iowa National Guard from 1962 to 1968.
He was employed as a skilled carpenter for several construction companies, including Vince Conrad, Art Oeth and Gary Kennedy. He retired from the Dubuque Community School District, where he was employed as a carpenter.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Carpenters Union Local 678.
Don could build or fix anything and was proud to have built his home on Clarke Drive. He enjoyed trips to the casino. Don dearly loved his family, and took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Geny, of Dubuque; three children, Kurt (Sandy) Duehr, of Antioch, Ill., Tammy Duehr, of Dubuque, and Tricia (Kenith) Barnett, of Antioch; three grandchildren, Olivia and Alexis Duehr and Donald Edward Barnett; two sisters, Mary Fangman and Phyllis Berfeld, both of Dubuque; brothers and sisters-in-law, Norm Henkels, of San Diego, Carrie (Ray) Swingler, of Benton Harbor, Mich., Marita (Gene) Oberbroeckling, of Dyersville, Tom Henkels, of Tucson, Ariz., Pete Henkels, of Dubuque, Therese (Dan) Engelken, of Dyersville, Iowa, and Tony (Judy) Henkels, of Florida; and many favorite nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward, in 1950; his mother, Christina, in 1985; his sister, Doris Anthony, in 1999, and her husband, Jack Anthony, in 1977; his mother-in-law, Ludwina Henkels, in 1975, and his father-in-law, Rudolph Henkels, in 1985; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Henkels, in 2001, and Marge Henkels, in 1969; and a brother-in-law, Roger Fangman, in 2008.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque and St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
