INJURIES PROVE FATAL

Peter Clemens Who Was Struck
By Train Last Friday, Died From
Injuries Tuesday

Mr. Peter Clemens, well known wagon maker of this city died at the family home on West Main Street Tuesday morning, as the result of injuries sustained by being struck by the Illinois Central passenger train, known as the “Clipper," Friday morning. Mr. Clemens was on his way uptown from the Great Western Depot, was struck by the snow-plow of the engine of the in-coming train and hurled about twenty feet. He was removed to the office of Dr. B. H. Luehrsmann and later to his home. He was severely injured about the head, back and also on several limbs, which resulted in his death stated above.

OBITUARY

Mr. Peter Clemens was born in Kindsbach in Rhenish Baveria in Germany, on March 17, 1837 and was nearly 69 years of age. At the age of 23 years he came to America and first resided in Brooklyn, New York where he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Smith. The family moved to Guttenberg, Iowa, and in 1867 came to Dyersville.

His wife died about two months ago, on November 8, 1906.

He is survived by ten children four daughters; Mary, wife of W. Chwala, Anna, Elisabeth and Margaret and six sons; Frank, Nicholas, Joseph and Peter who reside in Dyersville, and John and Henry of Dubuque.

He also leaves his aged father in Germany and three brothers, Frank of West Lafayette, Indiana, John at Canton, Ohio and Joseph at Brooklyn New York.

His life work was that of a wagon and buggy manufacturer and during the 68 years he resided here he became very popular as an industrious mechanic, and was highly esteemed by his fellow citizens who regret to hear of his sudden death and extend their sympathy to the bereaved children.

The funeral took place on Thursday morning at 9:30 o’clock and was largely attended by sympathizing friends. The pallbearers were N. Esch, H. Goerdt, H. Forkenbrook, Charles Bahning, John Schlickmann, and P. Warren.

Requiem services were held at St. Francis church, rev. Father Wieneke officiating. Burial took place in St. Francis Cemetery.
