Formerly a Citizen and Business Man
Of Cascade

Alpheus Jewett Wightman died at Ottawa, Kansas, Saturday October 26. He was engaged in the dry goods business eith his brother William over 30 years ago, and will be remembered by the older citizens of Cascade. His brother William was the builder of the residence now owned and occupied by Mrs. Devlin and family.

Mr. Wightman was born in Granville, Ohio, January 12, 1829, and in 1854 was married to Miss Jane Wood, who died last Thanksgiving Day.

In 1849, he removed to Iowa and in the year following crossed the plains to Californoa, returning in 1852, when he engaged in business in Cascade. Later he went into farming, which he followed until 1869, when he removed to Kansas and engaged in the milling business with H. D. and C. D. Crane until 1880. He was twice elected county treasurer and was a man highly esteemed by all who were fortunate to know him.

A brother George, and four sister survive him.
