DEATH OF DANIEL HALLAHAN
The Well Known Prairie Creek Farmer
Dies SuddenlyLast Monday afternoon about 4 o’clock, Daniel Hallahan, one of the foremost and largest farmers in Dubuque County, was fatally stricken with paralysis and fell from his wagon near the Waller place, a few miles west of Dubuque. He was picked up and carried into the Waller residence in an unconscious condition, and did not revive until two hours later. Mr. Hallihan then became conscious and remained in a rational state until 5 o’clock Wednesday morning when he gradually succumbed to the disease, which, started in his limbs, crept up to the more vital organs of his body, and at 8 o’clock Wednesday death ensued. During the period of consciousness Mr. Hallahan told how he was suddenly seized with a numbing sensation in his limbs and stomach and instantly knew no more until aroused two hours later. The remains were brought to the homestead in Prairie Creek Wednesday morning.
He was born in County Cork, Ireland, about sixty-seven years ago and came to Iowa in 1854. For the past thirty years he has lived in Prairie Creek Township, and was probably the largest farmer in the Township, having tilled the past season over one thousand acres of land.
As a man he was held in high respect by his neighbors and all who knew him. His genial and friendly disposition, his strong individual character, and un-answering integrity, were attributes that he possessed in a marked degree, endeared him in the esteem of the community where he was best known, and at once impressed those who were but casually acquainted with him. His death will be sincerely regretted.
Six sons and two daughters survive him: John, Dennis, Daniel, Jeremiah, Patrick and Michael, and Julia and Margaret. He was an uncle of M. F., Timothy and Daniel Barrett, of this city, and Thomas Barrett, of Bernard.
The funeral was held at the Monastery this morning at 9 o’clock. The Rev. Father David officiating.
