Cascade Pioneer, published in Cascade, Iowa on Friday, May 3rd, 1895

On Friday morning, April 25, 1895, Miss Jane Skahill, died at the family residence of her mother, Mrs. Ann Skahill, at the age of 21 years. She had been ill for the past year or more, and the cause of death was consumption.

All Death’s work is sad, but the sting of its poignant lance is bitterest, it seems, when it stills the heart of a young and blooming life just entering upon a career of glory and promise. The splendor of this woman’s youth, the charm of her sunny nature, the elevated nobility of her mind, the spotless purity of her womanhood, made her a mark for the insatiate destroyer. And for these virtues she was beloved, respected and honored. For these virtues she is disconsolately mourned. Her character of a Christian example and a glory to her sex. She was a dutiful daughter and a true and sincere friend. Her place in the business affairs of Cascade, as the manager of her father’s store after his death, widened her acquaintance and likewise extends the circle of bereavement and regret which follows her departure. She was always genial and courteous, both in business and social affairs.

The fortitude with which she bore the pangs of disease, and the smiling patience with which she awaited the final summons, were triumphs of faith that diminished the force of death’s blow. And the closing of her young life was like unto the folding up, at eventide, of a beautiful flower that had adorned and inspirited the sunlight of a day.

Of her family her mother, three sisters and brother survive her, and the sympathy of this community is with them in their sad affliction.
The funeral took place last Sunday morning at 10:30 o’clock from the family residence to St. Martin’s Church. The Rev. Father Roche preached an eloquent sermon, and her remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery beside her father, the late J. P. Skahill.

The pallbearers were: Messrs.: C. J. and Thomas Devlin, David and R. H. Beatty, C. H. Huntington and Theo. Maire.
