Franklin Adelbert Ransom was born at Binghamton, New York, August 24, 1854, one of seven children of the first marriage of his father, Elisha Ransom. His mother passed away when Franklin was not yet three. Franklin’s father married twice more, having no children by these marriages. The family moved to a farm in Dubuque Co. in 1866, then to Farley in 1888, where the elder Elisha Ransom died in 1898 at the age of 84.

Franklin was first educated in the schools in the area, finishing his education at Epworth Seminary. When he was 18, Franklin went clerking in a store in Farley, continuing five years. With his brother Albert, he embarked in the hardware business.

He married Anna Newton in 1883. Anna born Jan. 4, 1863-was the daughter of Rev. Isaac & Mary (Baker) Newton. The Ransom’s belonged to the Episcopal Church where Franklin served on the Board of Trustees. They had three children: Vera Leroy, a bookkeeper for Ransom Bros.; Dr. Ralph Newton, a dentist in Plattsmouth, Nebraska; and Alice Lucille.
