Sister Mary Philip Jasper, PBVM, 82, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Mount Loretto Motherhouse.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Loretto's Sacred Heart Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Mount Loretto, where there will be a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on March 7, 1923, in Dyersville, Iowa, daughter of Tony and Clara (Anstoetter) Jasper.

She entered the Sisters of the Presentation in May 1944, and professed her perpetual vows on May 16, 1950.

She received her bachelor of arts degree, magna cum laude, from Loras College, Dubuque, and her master of arts degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.

Her career, spanning 54 years, took her to Placid, Monona, Sheldon, Cedar Falls, Storm Lake and Key West, Iowa; St. Paul, Minn.; and Oak Lawn, Ill. Her ministries included teaching, school principal and community governing board member. Sister Mary Philip helped to open and establish Catholic schools in Sheldon, St. Paul and Oak Lawn, where she taught and served as their principal. She retired to Mount Loretto Motherhouse in 1992, and continued to be active in the community archives. She served as community secretary from 1996 to 2001.

Sister Mary Philip continued with community service and prayer and her hobbies of puzzle working and handcrafts until her death.

Surviving are her sisters, Rita Schwendinger, Lois (Joe) Hoeger, Sister Mary Karen Jasper, PBVM, and Mary Smith; her brother, James (Lois); many nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of the Presentation, with whom she shared her life for 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roy Jasper; and two brothers-in-law, Gerry Schwendinger and Orlin Smith.
