General Francis J. Herrom died in New York on Thursday, Jan. 9. He was one of Iowa’s four major-generals in the war of the Rebellion. When that war broke out, he was captain of the Governor's Grays at Dubuque. The company offered its services and went into the First Iowa Regiment, that served only three months. It saw only one battle, that of Wilson's Creek just as the regiment was about to be retired. Gen. H. returned home and when the 9th Iowa Infantry was mustered in, he became its colonel. He commanded the regiment at the battle of Pea Ridge where he was severely wounded and taken prisoner. After his exchange, he became brigadier-general and conducted himself so well that he was made a major-general at the age of 24 years and enjoyed the pre-eminence of being the youngest officer of that rank in the army. He held the position until mustered out at the end of the war, after which he went to New York and entered into the banking business. In war times, we Iowans were very proud of General Herrom.
