PEOSTA, Iowa -- William J. Clemens, 82, of 11114 Cox Springs Road, Peosta, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Friends and relatives of William may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Centralia.
William was born on July 12, 1931, in New Melleray, rural Peosta, son of Louis and Leona (Deutmeyer) Clemens. He received his education in the Peosta schools. On Sept. 13, 1952, he was united in marriage to Helen Schmitt at the former Annunciation Catholic Church in Lattnerville. The couple farmed in the Peosta area.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Peosta, for which he was an usher and also was a past council member. He was a former member of the Dubuque County Fair Board and the Dubuque County Cattlemen's Association, of which he was an inductee into their Hall of Fame. He was a 4-H leader of the 4-H Beef Feeders, of Peosta, Iowa. He exhibited cattle in 13 different states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, Kentucky, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Texas and Missouri. He was a livestock judge and judged in five different states: Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri. He also judged at the Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin State Fairs and also at the World Steer Show in Des Moines.
He was an avid New York Yankees and Boston Celtics fan. He enjoyed his many visits to the dog track with Helen. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and fishing in the local ponds.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Clemens, of Peosta; five children, Wanda (Jerry) Brink, of Elkader, Dana (Todd) McDermott and Doug (Molly) Clemens, both of Bernard, June Jackson (friend, Geoff Grassle), of Savage, Minn., and Karin (Ron) Costa, of White Bear, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Crystal (Andy) Hoefer, Travis McDermott, Preston Brink (special friend, Megan Thompson), Cody (Nic) Noonan, Bailey Clemens, Whitney Clemens, Wesley Clemens, Gina Costa, Grace Costa and Taylor Jackson; five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Lacey and Bo Hoefer and Leo and Ally Noonan; a brother, Louie Clemens, of Chicago; and a sister, Judy (Dale) Digmann, of Worthington.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
