Large Crowd Attends Rites of Prominent Dubuquer

The funeral of Mrs. Sylvia K. Mathis, 75, lifelong resident of Dubuque who died Saturday night at 11 o'clock in Finley Hospital, was held Tuesday afternoon.

The services for the widow of Christian K. Mathis were held at the Egelhof Home for Funerals starting at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. C. Vin White, pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, officiated at both the services in the funeral home and at the graveside. Easter Star services were also held. This later ritual was under the auspices of the Julien Chapter, No. 125, and in charge of Worthy Matron Anne Wilson

Burial was in Linwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles G. Kretschmer, Karl Eschen, F. O. Humke, Dr. A. M. Kaehr, W. S. Ludwick, and C. J. Wymer.

Ushers at the funeral home were W. S. Ludwick and Clarence Wymer. The funeral home was taxed to capacity with relative, friends, and acquaintances of Mrs. Mathis.

The death of Mrs. Mathis followed a long illness.

She was identified with the Parent-Teacher Association movement in Dubuque for many years and was the first secretary-treasurer of the Fulton School Parent-Teacher organization

Born in Dubuque

Mrs. Mathis was born in Dubuque on April 18, 1862, the daughter of the late Prof. Charles G. and Anna (Fengler) Kretschmer. She was a graduate of the Audubon School and the Dubuque High School. She was married to Christian K. Mathis on June 13, 1888.

Her survivors are one daughter, Lucy E.; two sons, Wilfred H. of Dubuque and John L. of Denver, Colo.; and one brother, William M. Kretschmer of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on Nov. 11, 1936; by her parents; one daughter Emily, who died in 1912; three brothers, Frank, Herbert, and Fred M. Kretschmer; and one sister, Mrs. Eugenia Hollingsworth.

She was a member of the Julien Chapter, No 125, Order of the Easter Star.
