DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Alice M. Ament, 78, of 105 Third St. SW, Dyersville, died at 3:28 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at home, following a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke and the Rev. Richard Ament officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. and an Order of Martha's and a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Ament was employed as a registered nurse at the Delaware County Hospital, Manchester, the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, and later at the Senior Home, Monticello, until her retirement in 1998.
She was born on Jan. 10, 1928, in Bernard, daughter of Peter and Sarah (Johnson) Then. She married Paul Francis Ament on April 3, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid.

She was a 1946 graduate of the Peosta Public High School. She attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her RN Degree in 1949.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Dyersville, for which she served as Eucharistic Minister and Host Maker; the Dyersville Catholic Daughters of the Americas- St. Rose Court 350, for which she served as Past Regent; the Dyersville Order of Martha's, which she served as Treasurer; the Senior Citizen's, for which she was President; a Bible study and several card clubs.

Alice enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles reading and going out to eat.

Surviving are 11 children, William T. (Julie) Ament, of Epworth, Peter H. (Janie) Ament, Daniel P. (Debra) Ament, Gretta M. Ament and Luetta J. (Larry) Bockenstedt, all of Dyersville, Colleen A. (Norbert) Janning, of LeMars, Ronald J. (Donna) Ament, of Farley, Janell M. (Terry) Deutmeyer, of Petersburg, Mary Alice (Trevor) Wienhold of Nicholasville, Ky., Lloyd F. (Lea) Ament, of New Vienna, and Paula M. Ament, of Odenton, M.D.; 28 grandchildren, Adam Ament, Jeff and Mary Jo Ament, Courtney (fiance, Justin McCrabb) Ament, Craig Ament, Melissa and Erica Janning, Austin, Ashley, Joseph and Jackie Ament, Grettchen Ament, Jessica (Wil) Rossi, Tracy, Brandon and Jordon Deutmeyer, Tricia, Travis, Troy and Trent Bockenstedt, Marissa, Alec and Bradan Wienhold, Heather Koehn, Dillon, Dean, Devin, Zoe Ament, and one on the way; seven siblings, Jeanette (Joe) Nilles, Joe (Nancy) Then and Mary Jane (Bob) Gleason, all of Dyersville, Bill (Judy) Then and Ruth (Mike) Lehmann, both of Epworth, Jim (Linda) Then, of Bernard, and Phil (Janet) Then, of Peosta; two sisters-in-law, Janell Then and Mary Kay Then, both of Epworth; a brother-in-law, Bill Eklund, of Janesville, Wis.; brothers and sisters-in-law of Paul, Helen (Don) Meyer and Carol Gudenkauf, both of Dyersville, and the Rev. Richard Ament, of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Sarah Then; her husband, Paul F. Ament, on Aug. 14, 1986; a granddaughter, Abbie A. Ament; three brothers, Tom Then, Leo Then and Frank Then; two sisters, Mildred Eklund, and Sr. Gretta Then; a nephew, Terry "T.T." Then; a great nephew, Matt Then; her father and mother-in-law, Herman and Frances Ament; a sister-in-law, Doris Ament; and a brother-in-law, Godfrey (Fay) Gudenkauf. -----
