John H. "Jack" Gavin, 90, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Sunday afternoon, February 24, 2019, at Unity Point Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.

A funeral mass celebrating "Jack's" life will be held at 11 A.M., Friday, March 1, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, and again after 10 A.M. Friday at the church. A 6:45 P.M. Rosary will be recited on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors.

John Herman Gavin was born on May 4, 1928 in Cascade, Iowa, to Leo and Florabel (Klinkner) Gavin. He grew up and attended school in in the Temple Hill area prior to entering the military. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army earning an honorable discharge. He married Beatrice C. Bormann on May 30, 1964 in Springbrook, Iowa. Five children were born to this union, Marla, Susan, Robert, Joel and Jason.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge, "Jack" moved to Maquoketa where he worked as a short order cook at the Tango Supper Club in Maquoketa for a couple of years. He retired after a 30-year career with Rotman Motor Company in Maquoketa where he worked as an autobody repairman. In retirement, he worked for RonAnn's Floral Shoppe in Maquoketa as a deliveryman.

"Jack" was a member of the Maquoketa American Legion Post #75, and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Maquoketa Cardinal fan, enjoyed visiting area casinos, latch hooking, and most importantly spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren's activities.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Beatrice Gavin of Maquoketa, IA; his children, Marla (Daniel "Boone") Naeve of Clinton, IA, Susan (Tim) Meier of Cuba City, WI, Bob (Jennifer) Gavin of Maquoketa, IA, Joel (and fiancé Renee) of West Burlington, IA, and Jason (Wendy) Gavin of North Liberty, IA; 9 grandchildren, Allyson Naeve, Isaac, Abe and Sami Meier, Liz and Zac Gavin, Jonathan and Joshua Gavin, and Corissa Gavin; a brother David (Lois) Gavin of Bernard, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Oscar, Justin and Thomas, and sisters LaVonne and Arlene.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a John H. "Jack" Gavin memorial fund has been established.
