Doc performed some emergency surgeries in the homes and it wasn’t unusual for him to call some strong men in off the street to help hold the patient down while he administered ether.
Dr. Shield’s kindness and generosity were universal but much will remain unknown. He helped many youngsters with their schooling, offered his own sheets and bedding to poorer families when babies were born and many times slipped $5 bills in with prescriptions. He never charged the Religious for his services and upon his death left some of his equipment to the New Melleray Abbey. His obituary follows:
Cascade, Iowa – SPECIAL: Dr. Duncan C. Shields, 73 of Bernard, Iowa died in his room at the Barrett Hotel in Bernard, Thursday afternoon at 12:40 o’clock following a long illness. Aggravation of his condition by the unusually hot weather was reported as responsible for hastening his death.
Dr. Shields practiced in Bernard for 46 years, beginning his service back in the horse and buggy days. An invalid, Dr. Shields served his patients from a wheel chair.
He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School at Ann Arbor, Michigan where he received his medical doctor’s degree.
Very prominent in civic affairs, Dr. Shield’s biggest contribution to Bernard, in addition to his long years of service, was the organizing of the Bernard – Zwingle Telephone Company.
The body is resting at Mrs. Catherine Barrett’s home in Bernard. Funeral arrangements will be announced later, however it is said that the body is to be sent to Canada for burial.
He is survived by four brothers; James of Albinston, Ont.; Roland of Brooklyn, New York; Jack and George of Seattle, Washington; and two sisters, Mrs. Euphene … rest of article is missing
