JAMES F. HEDLEY DEAD

Well known Auctioneer Passes Away after a Lingering Illness

James F. Hedley, who has been a resident of Dubuque for over fifty years, passed away at his residence, 186 West Eighth street, at 8 o’clock Monday morning after an illness covering a period of two years.

He was born in I833 in Leadhills, Scotland, and came to this country in 1852. landing in New York. From there here he came to Dubuque and engaged in auctioneering the next year.

On July 4. I855, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Brown of this city, who died March 23, 1899. Of this union, seven children were born — six of whom died in infancy. He was again married on March 28, 1900, to Miss Elvira C. Leffert of this city. In 1859 he moved to St. Louis with his family, where he continued auctioneering for the government until after the war, when he returned to Dubuque , where he opened a real estate office in connection with his auctioneering, both of which he carried on successfully until his recent illness.

He belonged to St. Luke ’s Methodist church and served the church faithfully and loyally with both his spiritual fervor and financial support. He was always cheerful and liberal in his contributions. To all his friends,his home was ever open. The widow and orphan always found in him a faithful friend and helper.
Besides his wife, under whose kind, watchful and loving care he died, he Is survived by a son. John E., and a brother, Henry, of this city, also a sister in Scotland.
The funeral arrangements have not been made.
