The Funeral of J. H. Thedinga

The funeral of the late J. H. Thedinga, took place yesterday afternoon, was an expressive testimonial on the part of our people of the esteem in which the memory of the deceased was held. Every carriage that could be procured in the city was in the procession. The Early Settlors, of which society he was a member attended in a body, besides the members and ex-members of the School Board, city and county officials, officers of the various banks and many of our most prominent professional and business men. At two o’clock in the afternoon, large numbers of the people had assembled at the late residence, which was so crowded with others who could not gain entrance to the house. Funeral services were read by Rev. Dr. Bingham, who made some beautiful remarks suggested by the impressiveness of the occasion and justified by the stainlessness of the character of him who had surrendered his life at the will of the Great Ruler of men, on the conclusion of the remarks, the heart-broken wife and weeping sons and daughters were led forth by kindly hands, and placed in carriages to accompany the remains of a father so fondly loved, to Linwood. It was sad to look upon them as they passed, oppressed with grief and shedding tears that came from the heart. Those tears told of the goodness of him who had been called away, and of the depth of the wounds left in loving hearts by his going. After the mourning family were placed in carriages the casket containing the still form of the dead were borne out by the pallbearers, F. Hinds, W. G. Stewart, John Krels, J. D. Jennings, Wm. Coates and F. M. Pleins, and placed in the hearse. Then the sad procession took its slow march to the cemetery. There appropriate remarks were made by Rev. Mr. Bingham, and the body of him who was esteemed in life was laid in the earth.
