Mary A. Theisen, 78, of 4548 Camelot Drive, formerly of 1815 Wood St., died at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, following a short struggle with lung cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in the mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Behr's Funeral Home, where there will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m.

She was born on March 9, 1930, in Cascade, Iowa, daughter of James E. And Mildred (Supple) Dolphin. She attended school in Cascade and Dubuque.

She married Leo J. Theisen on April 12, 1950, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade.

Mary was employed as a teller at American Trust in Dubuque, retiring after 17 years.

She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She was a regular volunteer at Nativity and Resurrection and would help out wherever she was needed. She collected donations from the Catholic Daughters and other individuals to make more than 2000 quilts that were donated to area charities and service organizations for distribution to people in need. She also was a Girl Scout leader for many years while her girls were involved in scouting.

Mary was an avid gardener and lover of flowers. She enjoyed sewing, baking and playing cards and games with her grandchildren. She enjoyed boating and being surrounded by her family at their cabin at Spruce Creek, near Bellevue. Mary was a loving mother and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Leo J. Theisen, of Dubuque; a son, Kenneth (Grace) Theisen, of Piedmont, Calif.; four daughters, June (Steve) Foxen, of Durango, Iowa, Gerianne (Allan) Buelow, of Asbury, Iowa, Lisa (Donavan) Honnold, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Lori (Jason) Heunisch, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Jero Gonzales and Jhass Gonzales Theisen, Chris (Nancy) Foxen, Robbie Foxen, T.J. Haislet, Sarah, Greg, Tony and Joe Buelow, Rikki (Dan) Helvick, Ryan and Jade Honnold, Caylee and Colton Heunisch; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona (Bob) Schwarzmann, of McLean, Va., and Rose Holmes, of Cascade; a brother, Carl (Nancy) Dolphin, of Cascade; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosene Trumm, Gail Dolphin, Agnes Bakey, Mary Ann Theisen and Sally (Jack) McMahon and Mike Simon; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Merlin, Robert and Donald Dolphin.

In lieu of flowers, a Mary A. Theisen Memorial Fund has been established.
