OLD SETTLER GONE

John Madigan of Melleray Died Last Thursday Evening.

John Madigan, aged 75, passed away at the home of P. M. Welch, at Melleray 8:15 Thursday evening, January 24th. In the death of Mr. Madigan the county losses one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens. A man who was for may years actively interested in everything pertaining to the welfare of the community in which he dwelt.

Deceased was born in Kilkenny, Ireland and was educated at Melleray, Ireland. Emigrating to this country in 1847 (1850) he came directly to this county and had resided here ever since. His scholarly attainments were easily recognized and in the years of his activity he served the county in many capacities. As a (s)quire he beacame widely known, and in later years he taught school in Whitewater township One of the principal traits of character that marked him as a man of extraordinary ability was the thoroughness with which he imparted big knowledge to others. This fact is particularly emphasized by those who shared his friendhip and whom in many instances he prepared for more advanced education. Generous to a fault, the the presence of one who did much to further the interests of others, will be sadly missed. The late Father Albric of the Monastery was a brother of the deceased. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. P. M. Welch (Walsh) and Sister Magdeline of St. Clara's Academy. Mr. Madigan was unmarried. The funeral was held Saturday morning, at 9 o'clock' at the Monastery parish church and the remains were laid to rest in the adjacent churchyard.

note: his parents were Patrick & Margaret Madigan
