Pioneer Settlor Dead

Mr. Henry Kipp, a pioneer who had been a resident with this vicinity for half a century passed away last Monday, afternoon at his home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James F. Link, in North Dyersville. While Mr. Kipp had been quite feeble for some time on account of his advanced age, he was not seriously ill until a few hours prior to his death.

Mr. Kipp was born at Geseke, Westphalia, Germany on April 15th, 1822, where he grew to manhood. In accordance to the rules in the German Empire he served in the army for three years. Returning to his native home he was married to Katharine Schuering in 1849. With his bride, deceased emigrated to America the same year and landed in Baltimore, Maryland, where they resided one year after which they went to Quincy, Illinois, where they settled on a farm and resided for seven years. In the spring of 1856 they came to Dyersville and took up their residence on a farm six miles northwest of New Vienna where they resided to March 1886 when he retired from farming and with his wife took up residence in West Dyersville.

On October 2nd, 1895, a shadow of sorrow was cast over his declining years by the death of his beloved wife. The last ten years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Link. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kipp. Four died at Quincy, Ill., in their infancy and Joseph died at State Center five years ago. The two surviving children are Aug. H. Kipp, of New Vienna and Carrie, Mrs. J. F. Link, of this city.

By the death of Mr. Kipp, this community loses one of its oldest pioneers and a highly respected citizen. Coming to this vicinity in primitive days, Mr. Kipp met with the many privations. He was however very successful at farming. He was a man of sterling worth, honesty and uprightness being marked traits of his character, and in his declining years he could look back over a life of usefulness.

The funeral took place Thursday morning. Requiem services were held in St. Francis Church after which his early remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were George Schlinder, Joseph Pfeiler, Clemens Mairose, Valentine Weber, P. Schmidt, and Henry Goerdt. – Dyersville Commercial.
