DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Neil E. Necker, 74, of Dyersville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, after a sudden illness.

Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where an American Legion service will be at 4 p.m.

He was born on June 16, 1934, in Dyersville, son of George and Mildred (Hemming) Necker. He married Karen Wurscher on June 2, 1990, in Dyersville.

He graduated from Xavier High School with the class of 1952 and served his country as a radio operator in the Army during the Korean War.

Neil was a machinist at John Deere Dubuque Works in Dubuque for most of his career, but was involved in other ventures over the years. He also was the owner and operator of Necker's Jewelry, Mushroom Delights and Necker Antiques.

He was a member of American Legion Post 137.

Neil was an avid outdoorsman occupying many hours hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and gardening. His biggest thrill was bidding at auctions.

Surviving are his wife, Karen; children, Brad Necker, of Manchester, Kevin Necker, of Lakewood, Colo., Janaan Downey, of Houston, Kraig (Sherri) Necker, of Parker, Colo., and Amy (Jonathon) Hadaway, of Corpus Christi, Texas; stepchildren, Eric Wurscher, of S.D., Jessica (John) Perez, of N.C., and Melissa Smith, of Bellevue, Neb.; brothers, Bob Necker, of Dyersville, John (Pat) Necker, of Austin, Texas, and David (Doris) Necker, of Georgetown, Texas; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Necker, of De Witt; grandchildren, Madison, Jack and Spencer, Hunter and Dax, Luke and Hillary; and step-grandchildren, Courtney, Caity, Nathan, Aaron, Ethan, Jasmine and Alonna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Don; a sister, Betty (Ray) Thomas; the mother of his children, Pauline Moreland; and a sister-in-law, Dolly Necker.
