Mary Ellen Schuster, 86, of 3580 Pennsylvania Ave., died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Schuster taught kindergarten in the Dubuque community schools.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1913, in Cheboygan, Mich., daughter of Dr. Martin J. and Agnes M. (Richards) Cain. She married Edward J. Schuster on Sept. 2, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cheboygan; he died July 16, 1998.

She attended St. Mary's College, Norte Dame, Ind., and graduated from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. She was a charter member of the Dubuque Branch of the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the Dubuque Art Association and the Dubuque County Fine Arts Society. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her children, Louise (Joseph) Ottavi, of Dubuque, and Dr. Michael (Patti) Schuster, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Alice, Maria, John and Thomas Ottavi, Catherine Kolkoski, Dianne Clink, Christine Battiato and Laura Schuster; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Florence Lenz, of Scottsdale, and Mary Cain D'Ornellas, of Ocean, N.J.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John A. Cain and Dr. Martin J. Cain Jr.; and a son, John, in infancy.

Memorials may be given to Clarke College, St. Mark Community Center and Dubuque Montessori School.
