HOLY CROSS, Iowa- Joseph C. "Joe" Schmitt, 89, of Holy Cross, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Stone Hill Care Center Dubuque, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday at Holy the Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1917, in Bankston, Iowa, son of Michael and Mayme (Daly) Schmitt. He moved to Holy Cross at 2 weeks of age to the present farm.

He married Lucille Jaeger on Sept. 9, 1941, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Balltown, Iowa. Together they farmed their entire life in Holy Cross.

He was one of the original founders of the Holy Cross Athletic Club, member of the Holy Cross Holy Name Society and the Dubuque County Farm Bureau.

Joe loved his family and the farm life. He enjoyed playing cards, going to the dog track and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille of Holy Cross; a son, Kenny Schmitt, of Holy Cross; four daughters, Donna (Roger) Sweeney and Lou Ann Schmitt, both of Holy Cross, Janet (Dave) Patten, of Lisbon, and Darlene (Phil) Frasher, of Worthington; 11 grandchildren, Christine (Dan) Reiss, of Ryan, Steve (Dawn) Sweeney, of Robins, Brian (Amy) Sweeney, of Merriam, Kan., Dawn (Tom) Cummer, of Sherrill, Mark Patten, of Olathe, Kan., Randy (Sarah) Patten, of Mount Vernon, Danny Patten, of Lisbon, Renee (Bryan) Casey, of Anamosa, Lynn (Matt) Schmitz and Michele (Ben) Jones, both of Dyersville, and Kevin Boge, of Cedar Rapids; four step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eileen Schmitt, of Epworth, and Helen (Howard) Breitbach, of Rickardsville; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Irene Schmitt, of Dyersville, Peter and Madonna Jaeger, of Dubuque, and Aureila Jaeger, of Balltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, MaeRita Leibfried; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Leibfried and Melvin (Jim) Schmitt.

A Joe Schmitt Memorial Fund has been established.
