Anthony "Tony" A. Willenborg, 87, of Dyersville, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, in Oak Crest Manor, surrounded by family, following a long illness. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a parish Scripture service will be held at 4 p.m., the Dyersville Fire Department will meet at 6 p.m. and the Veterans of Foreign Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in St. Francis Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Jerry Kopacek.

Pallbearers will be Matt, Tim, Nick, Scott, Lance and Ric Willenborg and Josh Edgin.

Tony was born Aug. 18, 1918, in New Vienna, Iowa, the son of Frank and Mary (Mescher) Willenborg. He married Mildred Kruse on Oct. 16, 1948. She died May 3, 1965. Tony then married Alma (Greiner) Schlichte on Oct. 19, 1968.

Tony farmed and worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. and he and Alma owned and operated the Ritz restaurant in Dyersville until his retirement in 1982. Tony was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Dyersville Legion Post 137, Edward W. Lake VFW Post 7736 of New Vienna, Knights of Columbus and was a former board member of the Dyersville Commercial Club.

Tony is survived by his wife, Alma; six children, Ken (Janice), Bob (Sue), Dan (Joyce), Bill (friend Sandi Boardman) Willenborg and Joyce (John) Tierney, all of Dyersville, and Judy (Curt) Keplinger of Geneseo, Ill.; five stepchildren, Wilma (Don) Rausch, Gene (Tanya) Schlichte of Dyersville, Joyce (John) Goffinet of Monticello, Donna (Steve) Hunter of Hopkinton and Lt. Col. Mark (Maureen) Schlichte of Rapid City, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Willenborg of Dyersville; and two sisters, Helen Mock of Dyersville and Mary Poire of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred; a granddaughter, Beth Willenborg; a stepson, Gary Schlichte; a brother, Bernard Willenborg; and four sisters, Marcella Brunsman, Viola Willenborg, Sister Francita Willenborg and Rita Schlung.

A Tony Willenborg memorial fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Oak Crest Manor in Dyersville and Hospice of Dubuque for the excellent care and concern they showed for Tony throughout his illness.
