Lorraine E. Pfeiler, 97, of Luther Manor, Dubuque, formerly of Holy Cross, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3:30 p.m.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1907, in Holy Cross, daughter of Philip and Barbara (Rausch) Brecht.

She married Aloysius M. Pfeiler on Feb. 22, 1933, in Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1990. Lorraine was a homemaker and farmed for many years with her husband on the family farm near Holy Cross.

She was an active member of the Dubuque County Farm Bureau Women's Group, the Dubuque County Fair Board and was one of the organizers of the Rural Women's Food Stand at the county fair.

Lorraine and Al were longtime activists in Dubuque County Democratic Party politics, serving numerous terms on the Dubuque County Democratic Central Committee.

She was the first 4-H leader (1943) of the Holy Cross Home Helpers and remained a leader for many years, a volunteer at the Holy Cross School for 20 years and was the first chairperson of the parent/teacher group of the Holy Cross Schools and first secretary/treasurer of Holy Cross/Rickardsville Senior Citizens Group.

She also was a member of the Holy Cross Rosary Society, Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Order of Foresters and served on the Area on Aging Commission for Dubuque County.

Lorraine's hobbies were her concern for others, gardening, baking, card playing, quilting (was a member of the Dyersville quilting group) and crocheting. She was an avid Cubs fan since 1930.

Lorraine will be remembered by her family and friends as a caring and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are three children, Louis (Carol), of Dubuque, Barbara (Roger) Kueter, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Lyal (Melita), of Rickardsville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Francis Brecht, of Holy Cross.

She also was preceded in death by seven brothers, Peter, George, John, Leo, Nick, Aloysius and Victor Brecht; and five sisters, Katie Gassmann, Lena Liddiard, Emma Ungs, Marie Jaeger and Harriet Davidshofer.

Memorials are preferred to the RHCL Endowment Fund.
