OLD BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Dr. Herbert C. Meyer, 80, of Old Bethpage, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at North Shore/Long Island Jewish Hospital, New Hyde Park, from complications following heart surgery.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, Iowa, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, Iowa, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1924, in Brooklyn, son of Dr. Charles and Dorothy (Cutler) Meyer. He graduated from Flushing (N.Y.) High School in 1940. After attending Queens College, he volunteered for the service in 1942.

He served in World War II as a staff sergeant in the Army of the United States, 218th Malaria Survey Detachment in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, Southern Philippines Campaign. He also served with the Army of the Occupation in Japan. He was discharged in 1946 and then graduated with a doctorate degree in podiatric medicine from Long Island University.

He married Virginia Schemmel on Sept. 18, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He practiced podiatry in Flushing until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of St. Pius X Parish in Plainview and an active member of the Plainview American Legion Post 1812 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5942. He was a member of both the New York State and the American Podiatric Medical Associations. He was a fellow of the American Association of Hospital Podiatrists.

Herb was an avid photographer, Macintosh computer user and a voracious reader.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Schemmel Meyer, of Old Bethpage; two daughters, Deborah S. (Lee David) Fautsch, of Dubuque, and Sheree Ann Meyer, of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Justin Fautsch, of Los Angeles, and Kristin Fautsch, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Dr. Rachel Schemmel, of East Lansing, Mich., and Amy Meyer, of San Francisco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Charles and Dorothy Meyer; and a brother, Dr. George D. Meyer.

A Herbert C. Meyer Memorial Fund has been established.
