DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Donald H. Wessels, 86, of Dyersville, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at home, after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Mark McGovern officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m. and an American Legion service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Wessels was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and drove a school bus for Western Dubuque County Community School District.

He was born on April 7, 1917, in Petersburg, son of Henry J. and Antionette (Tegeler) Wessels. He married Norma Lee Dorrell on April 25, 1944, in Marceline, Mo.

He served in the Army from 1940-1946.

Don was a member of the American Legion Post 137 and the Dyersville Sportsman's Club.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Lee; seven daughters, Linda (Herman) Fuentes, of Boulder, Colo., Gladys Wessels and Helen (Tom) Urban, both of Dubuque, Susan (Sergio) Trujillo and Lois and Lola Wessels, all of Yuma, Ariz., and Sandra (Mario) Blasi, of Epworth; four sons, Dean (Jane), Samuel and Daniel Wessels, all of Dyersville, and Terry (Mary Ann) Wessels, of Arlington, Texas; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Delores Pfohl and Sister Mary David Wessels, both of Dubuque, and LuAnn Reicher, of Dyersville; and a brother, Jimmy (Emma) Wessels, of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Frances Mary, in infancy; a granddaughter, Angela Fuentes; three sisters, Isabelle Engelken, Marcella Krapfl and Gene Fitzgerald; and two brothers, Clarence and Ralph.
