John Norman "Midge" Delaney, 78, of Dubuque, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at home, following a brief battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, with the Rev. Greg Bjornstad officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

He was born on March 2, 1929, in Dubuque, son of John and Loretta Delaney.

He married Mary Burd in October of 1952, at Holy Ghost Church. They later divorced. He married Joan Meyer Felderman on July 4, 1970, in Dubuque.

He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Loras Academy in 1947.

He served in the Navy from 1948 to 1950 on board the U.S.S. Badoeng Straits CVE-116, a carrier escort based in San Diego. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked at the Dubuque Packing Co. for 32 years.

Midge was an outstanding athlete, excelling at baseball, fastpitch softball, bowling, basketball and golf. He played for the legendary Lange Insurance fastpitch softball teams that dominated Dubuque softball in the 1950s and 1960s. Midge was inducted into the Dubuque Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1976, and the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.

An accomplished bowler, he won the all-events championship at the 1976, Iowa State Bowling Association tournament, the first person in Dubuque history to do so.

He enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles and especially time with family and friends. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Meyer Felderman; a sister, Lois Haislett, of Dubuque; two daughters, Kathy Nelson, of Cedar Rapids, and Judy Cooper, of Omaha, Neb.; five sons, Mark and Terry Delaney, of Dubuque, Mike Delaney, of Carmel, Ind., Stephen Delaney, of Burlington, and Ted Delaney, of Heyworth, Ill.; four step-children, Dave, Dan, Dennis and Jody Felderman, all of Dubuque; 35 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lynn Marie Delaney; a brother, Milt Delaney; and a grandson, Patrick Cooper.
