Eugene R. "Zuke" Zimmerman, 82, of 3525 Windsor Ave., died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St.

Mr. Zimmerman worked for the former Dubuque Packing Co., Dubuque Star Brewery and the Dubuque Community School District.

He was born on Dec. 5, 1922, in Dubuque, son of Herbert and Margaret (Link) Zimmerman. He married Elaine M. Hillard on Oct. 15, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He was a member of St. Mary's Parish, its Holy Name Society, the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, and was retired from Teamsters Union 421.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine; a son, Dave Zimmerman, of Dubuque; daughters, Susan (John) O'Meara, of North Aurora, Ill., Patricia Vaassen, Kathleen (Earl) Brimeyer, Carol (Tim) Dolson, Cindy (Gary) Pancratz and Juli (Dennis) Roth, all of Dubuque, and Diane Zimmerman and Lori Zimmerman, both of Brandon, Fla.; 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Cletus Zimmerman, of Dubuque; and a sister, Magdeline Higgins, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Herbert Jr. and Milton.

A Eugene R. Zimmerman Memorial Fund has been established.

A special thank-you to the staff at Mercy Medical Center, especially the staff in the Intensive Care Unit, Dr. Thomas Schreiber and Dr. George Kraemer.
