Joseph J. Clancy, 85, of 1605 Bies Drive, died at 2:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 273. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on June 5, 1923, in Fillmore, Iowa, son of Francis and Mary (McCallister) Clancy. He was a graduate of St. Columbkille's High School.

He married Elaine Hanifan, of Dubuque, on July 20, 1945, at the Treasure Island Navel Base in San Francisco. They celebrated their 63rd year of married life before his death.

Joe entered the armed services in August of 1943 and later received an honorable discharge from the Navy. He was sent to Australia, boarded a mine sweeper, then went to New Guinea, the Philippine Islands, Dutch East Indies and many islands in between.

He was employed by Standard (Amoco) Oil Co. and with his family, working in six states during 35 years of service. He retired April 1, 1981, followed by 25 years of being a snow bird in their RV unit. "What's over the next hill?" was his motto.

Joe was very active in the Knights of Columbus, member of Council 4236 Key West, "Our Lady's Rosary Makers" of the Resurrection Parish and was a member of the American Legion of Bellevue Post 273.

The pride of his life was his wife Elaine and their six children. "My only treasure was my family."

Surviving are his wife, Elaine; children, Jody (Thomas) Goldman, of Orlando, Fla., Dr. Pamela Espinoza, of Chula Vista, Calif., Michael (Cindy) Clancy, of Thermopolis, Wyo., Patrick (Donna) Clancy, of West La Fayett, Ind., Timothy Clancy, of San Diego, and Sean (Karen) Clancy, of Crown Point, Ind.; his grandchildren, Michael, Sean, Tamara, Shawn, Shelly, Daniel, Jennifer, Sara, Kristin and Curtis; and he also was blessed with six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis, in 1932; his mother, Mary, in 1990; sisters, Irene and Agnes; and his brother, Charles.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank-you to Dr. Mark Hermann and Dr. John Whalen for all of their care, kindness and compassion they gave to Joe.
