James A. Splinter, 71, of Dubuque, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be the St. Mary's Parish scripture wake service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Splinter worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for many years.

He was born on May 3, 1934, in Tennyson, Wis., son of Ervin and Lillian (Schrader) Splinter. He married Sylvia Baldwin on Nov. 16, 1957, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He served with the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia, of Dubuque; his children, Chris (Robert) Bauer, Shari Vrotsos and James (Kathy McDermott) Splinter, all of Dubuque; a brother, Ervin "Junior" (Norma) Splinter, of Eldridge, Iowa; three sisters, Rita (Peach) Cavanaugh, of Dubuque, Modesta "Sis" (Vincent "Jiggs" Jr.) Hoftender, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Linda (Melvin) Spoerre, of Shawnee, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Joan Splinter, of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, James (fiancee, Amber Schueller) Gassman, Amber Bauer, Adam (Heather) Bauer, April (fiance, Scott) Bauer, Nicole Vrotsos, Allen Vrotsos, James "Dustin" Splinter, David Splinter and Melissa Splinter; and four great-grandchildren, Maggie Gassman-Schueller and Robbie, Randy and Ricky Bauer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Splinter; a sister, Marie Hoag; and a brother-in-law, Albert Hoag.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the James A. Splinter Memorial Fund.

The Splinter family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Joseph Compton, Sherry, of Finley Home Care, and Barb Weidenbacher.
