Wayne Vernon Koons, 68, of Dubuque Nursing & Rehab Center, formerly of Ecumenical Towers, passed away at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call after noon today. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque.

He was born on April 19, 1941, in Dubuque, son of Vernon Ralph and Nettie Beatrice (Thomas) Koons. He attended high school in East Dubuque, Ill.

Wayne served with the Army in Vietnam.

He worked various jobs at the Pallet Co. and in maintenance at the Holiday Inn until his retirement.

Wayne had a small collection of airplanes and model cars and was an avid train buff. He even had a train layout in his room at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab. Wayne had a green thumb. He grew vegetables and flowers and had a beautiful rose garden.

Surviving are a brother, Milton J. (Betty C.) Koons, of Hazel Green, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard (Joyce) Koons; and a niece, Sandy Koons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.
