Frederic "Fritz" Yost, 69, of Dubuque, formerly of Galena, Ill., passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Hope Church, 11893 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Friends also may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, Ill.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1940, in Galena, son of Verne and Lucille (Gassen) Yost. He graduated from Galena High School.

In 1958, Fritz enlisted in the Air Force and was honorably discharged as an airman first class on Oct. 19, 1961. During that time, he met Judy Morley and they were married on Sept. 9, 1961. He fulfilled his obligation to the Air Force Reserves on July 10, 1964. For a few years, they lived in Lincoln, Neb., Golden Colo., then relocated back to Dubuque in 1965. In 1967, they adopted their son, Stefan, in Des Moines.

Fritz worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 35 years, retiring on June 30, 1999. He truly enjoyed his working years and all his friendships he developed over the 35 years. Following retirement, he spent the past few years working part-time at Culver's, doing maintenance, and most recently at Advance Auto, in Dubuque, as a driver.

He was a Member of Galena Elks Lodge 882, and was Exalted Ruler from 1985 to 1986. He also was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Galena, and American Legion and Eagles lodges.

During the family years, Fritz was busy coaching Little League baseball for many summers. He enjoyed coaching the traveling teams the most and spending time helping the kids experience the game. He also enjoyed watching the Galena Pirates football teams and the many playoff games. During his spare time, he enjoyed golfing with his son, brothers-in-law and friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife, Judy, doing lawn work, painting his garden statues and sitting on their back deck watching the hummingbirds in their feeders.

Surviving are his wife, Judy, of Dubuque; and his son, Stefan, of Bartlett, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father, Verne, and mother, Lucille (Gassen) Yost.

The family requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, a Frederic "Fritz" Yost Memorial Fund has been established at any Dupaco Credit Union location.
