Nicholas M. "Nick" Long, 53, of 4604 Cardinal Drive, died peacefully at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at home surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Chapel services will be at 2 p.m. Thurs-day in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, with burial in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St.

Nick was formerly employed at Eagle Window and Door and as a city and school bus driver. He was currently employed as a Blackjack dealer at the Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino.

He was born on Sept. 24, 1953, in Dubuque, son of Roy J. and Beverly J. (Haskell) Long. He married Mary Jo Lambert on Nov. 29, 1975, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He was a 1971 graduate of Stephen Hempstead High School.

Nick enjoyed woodworking, camping and hunting. He especially enjoyed fishing with his son and grandson. Nick was always eager to help anyone.

He was very kind-hearted and was an "eternal optimist." He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jo Long; two daughters, Heather L. Long (Larry Hurst), of Dubuque, and Jennifer J. Long (Matt Colston), of Williamsville, Ill.; a son, Jacob M. Long, at home; a grandson, Alex M. Long; his mother, Beverly J. Long, of Dubuque; six sisters, Raechel (Jim) Cole, Rebecca (Fred) Torres, Babette (Steve) Birch, Denise (Bill) Roussel, and Nellie (Robert "J.J.") Kimble, all of Dubuque, and Juanita (Terry) McCarthy, of Cassville, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a great-nephew, Kael Ball.

A Nicholas M. Long Memorial Fund has been established.
